What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

What Is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your website and business information more discoverable, understandable, and citable by AI-powered search engines such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot.

Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking in Google's blue links, GEO focuses on being the information that AI engines use when generating answers to user questions.

How AI Engines Find Information

When a user asks ChatGPT or Gemini a question like "best accounting software for small businesses," the AI doesn't simply list websites. It synthesizes information from multiple sources and generates a direct answer. The sources it draws from include:

  • Crawled web pages (via bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot)
  • Structured data (JSON-LD, Schema.org markup)
  • Authoritative content with clear, factual information
  • llms.txt files that provide machine-readable business context
  • Key Differences Between SEO and GEO

SEO optimizes for ranking positions in search engine results pages (SERPs). The goal is to appear in the top 10 blue links.

GEO optimizes for being cited, mentioned, or recommended when an AI engine answers a question. There are no "positions" — either your business is part of the AI's answer or it isn't.

    What GEO Involves

  • Technical access: Ensuring AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot) can access your website via robots.txt configuration.
  • Structured data: Implementing JSON-LD (Schema.org) markup so AI engines understand your business type, services, location, and offerings.
  • llms.txt: Creating a machine-readable file that summarizes your business for AI crawlers.
  • Content clarity: Making sure your website content clearly states what you do, where you operate, who you serve, and what makes you different.
  • Information accuracy: Correcting inconsistent or outdated information across your web presence.
  • Important Limitations

No company can guarantee that an AI engine will cite or recommend a specific business. AI responses change over time, vary by user context, and are influenced by many factors outside anyone's control.

GEO improves the signals that AI engines use, but does not control their outputs.
